Let’s get our priorities straight…
When campaigning it is easy to see life through the lens of struggle. There is a problem to be solved, there is oppression and poverty happening and so forth. But why solve all these problems? Ultimately, it is so we can enjoy life. When do we get to enjoy life, after the problems are solved? I personally think this will be a generational mission, so that’s not a plan that appeals to me. Doing whatever makes us happy has to be part of the fabric of campaigning.
Another perspective of healing divide
One way to look at it is that discrimination, abuse, misunderstanding, trauma and unspoken barriers between cultures is this problem to be solved. What if a more appealing way of looking at this is not the problems but the rewards that come with addressing these issues. Different cultures have different ways of letting off steam, enjoying themselves and relaxing. The reward is a greater variety of things to do and scope of experiences to explore. The world of cultural bubbles can be an exciting realm of exploration, and many of us might vibe better with other people’s ways of doing things.
Doing whatever works to make all genders/gender identities, sexualities and so forth feel safe and understood has more benefits than solving a societal rift. It means better relationships, more and better sex for everyone who wants it and deeper connection. Combining this with good sexual and relationship communication between different cultures amplifies this, as the scope for different experiences and perhaps more compatible relationships is expanded.
Is the movement more appealing yet?
Much of work culture sees things in terms of ‘productivity’, and fun as some unimportant thing that happens after work. Even from that perspective, having life satisfaction as a key principle checks out. Campaigning will be more appealing to people if the people doing the campaign are enjoying themselves. It boosts creativity, and increases the quality of whatever we put our minds to. It improves our health.
The dislike of a control system without meaningful consent, atrocities and the like, is one motivator to get involved. A better motivator is if their involvement will help them with issues that they are having, get them invited to some cool events and even get them laid if they want it! And one helps the other.
When people who are working a way that helps everyone enjoy life, and these people are the ones who are questioning the control structure, what will onlookers think? They will themselves start to question the authority, or at least stretch their imagination about what the world could look like.
Fun does not mean poor discipline or irresponsibility
Challenge is actually appealing to people. Discipline has been given a bad reputation by insecure authoritarian types, but actually it is a key componant of life satisfaction. It is also easier to be disciplined if you are genuinely enjoying life. For example, let’s say a hard days work is presented as a challenge and done to a high standard with some focus, the result is that you might enjoy the challenge, feel a sense of achievement and get to party after work. Discipline also opens the door for the vast life experience beyond the threshold of discomfort or even pain.
People should not be doing work they dislike. There is someone who likes pretty much all jobs so there is no excuse for the daily grind. If we do find a job that everybody hates, find the people who enjoy building robots to automate it if possible. We can certainly start to ditch unnecessary bureaucracy! This can be achieved not through a petition but with extremely good communication, trading and sharing of resources and some creative ideas. We don’t need any input from the system to start achieving this.
Once people have a good work life, social life and sex life, I’m willing to wager that societal demons such as drug addiction, theft and violence start to go away. Conflicts between groups of people will have less fire, as people are not full of stress and struggle. Diseases will start to decrease; the discipline required to maintain the body becomes easier with overall life satisfaction, and stress related illnesses will start to go.
